How did we end up in Belveze Du Razes?
(the question everybody asks)
It all started with the dream of living a different kind of life, and trying to find the best possible quality of life for us and our
(at the time) 2 children. We both believed that In France this could be possible.
After searching throughout France for years, spending each holiday exploring a new region, we finally found ‘The Aude’. We found Carcassonne one October holiday. We stayed in Carcassonne, hired a car and travelled miles through each town and village until we found Limoux. As soon as we walked through the streets after years of searching we thought ‘this is it’. It was a combination of so many factors. we loved the climate, the villages, the people. The countryside that autumn took our breath away at every turn. The fields were a riot of colour, as the vine leaves turned autumnal. the fields were undulating, soft and welcoming and the sky was the vivid blue we had been searching for.
Limoux had it all, a traditional stylish town on the river Aude, and as we walked along the streets we felt very comfortable with the quality shops and plentiful cafes and restaurants. As we searched for a house, we were attracted by a picture of an old townhouse which was in a village called ‘Belveze Du Razes’
The agent told us it was not too far away but we wouldn’t like it as it needed too much work doing to it.
The next day we viewed it, and there was no doubt in our minds that this could be the place we had been looking for.
Although the house needed complete renovation, we went ahead and bought it in 2006.
6 Rue De l’Eglise
The house itself is in the oldest part of a busy french village, It is close to the shops, next to the church, and also close to amazing walks/runs/bike rides in the vines with Pyrenean views.
We love the village as it is real!
For a small village (around 850 inhabitants) there is a wide variety of commerce, and most of the outlying villages use Belveze at their hub.
There is a small supermarket, (open 7-7 mon-sat), a bread shop, a butchers, a bank, a hairdressers, a beauty salon, a post office, a pizzeria, a bar/café, and there is a local chateau ‘Chateau Belveze’ which produces award winning wines, and they are available to buy from the chateau.
There is a tennis court, a lake, football ground and a swimming pool which is open during school holidays in July and August. There is a new basketball court. There are also several doctors, a dentist, a podiatrist and a large pharmacy.
The Town hall is open daily and has a tourist information point.
The main street of shops are 2 minutes walk from our house.
